The Ice Stupa Project of Himalaya : Where Science meets Culture
1. Causes, 3. Solutions, 5. Resilience
Climate Visuals Principles:
2. Tell new stories, 3. Show climate causes at scale, 8. Sustainability must be everyones objective
This photograph shows one of the early prototype of Artificial glacier which is called Ice Stupa that were built by the scientist Sonam Wangchuk and his team back in the winters of January 2017 , at that time there were very few of these were built and it was not much in the spotlights of world media.
The meltwater from glaciers is brought down by gravity pipes which is sprayed by a sprinkler and the sub-zero cold temperatures makes it ice cold again making it in the shape of a "Stupa" which is similar looking to a shrine for Buddhist people also bringing a sense of relatability to the locals.
The purpose and vision for these human-made glaciers is to mitigate the effect of climate change in this region and bring water to lowers areas where it can be stored in the ice form as it does not melt fast as an actual glacier. later on, this water is used by local farmers for irrigation and storage purposes throughout the year in their orchards and fields.
I was fascinated to see something beautiful yet innovative in the midst of a cold desert of Ladakh with the back drop of a monastery for the first time. Since then they have made many Stupas and there is one that go up to 73 feet high and this has brought attention of tourist crowds to see these massive Stupas . This project has been successful as an innovation and solution to deal with the effect of climate change , and many farmers have been taking benefits of this project and feel happy about it
