The unstoppable power of a major flood is unflinchingly illustrated in this image. Pictures like this - with people in distress, affected by serious extreme weather - are likely to be emotionally powerful. Although without a clear instruction for the viewer on how to 'act' on their emotional engagement, the overall effect can be overwhelming.
WHAT IT SHOWS: Hurricane Stan caused an emergency in Mexico. According to the Mexican government figures there were more than 1 million, 100 thousand people who have been directly affected by the floods with an unknown number who have disappeared. In Chiapas alone, 650 mm rain fell in a short period of time causing extensive damage to roads and houses. The flooding has cut off communities resulting in food quickly becoming in short supply. Greenpeace has installed a collection center to collect food, medicines, water and clothes to send to stricken areas.
