WHAT IT SHOWS: A heavy monsoon rain water and industrial chemicals paralyzed the streets of Old Dhaka in Bangladesh on July 11, 2017.Industrialization has been rapid in Bangladesh particularly in the sectors of leather, pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals. There are no plants for the treatment of solid and liquid waste in most of these industries for their proper management. These industries are discharging and dumping their wastes and effluents without treatment into nearby water bodies. The solid wastes are usually dumped in the open fields or buried in the ground. Various heavy metals in the untreated wastes indiscriminately released in the environment from the industries of Dhaka city suburbs are heavily polluting surrounding soil and water bodies Thus, the polluted water and agricultural soil affect crops and aquatic animals and consequently national health through food chain.
